OSCARS 2020: PREDICTIONS

It’s already that time of year again! As you all know, awards season for me hold the emotional equivalency of a five year old to Christmas Eve.

I have to say every single picture nominated this year has been beyond worthy and I have loved the mix of genres and diversity. For a while Best Picture has consisted of very formulated dramatic plots but I am absolutely living for this year’s lineup. Although some pictures I feel deserved a more significant nod like Midsommar and The Farewell didn’t make the major categories, I can’t complain about the final lineup at all.

Personally Jojo Rabbit is my film of the year and the stand-out for so many reasons, so I really wish it would have received more awards love. In saying that, it will stand the test of time as (in my opinion) one of the best films ever made and doesn’t need an award to prove that.

Any-who without further ado, here is my ballot for this year’s winners. My votes are based on actually predicting who the Academy will award, not what my heart wishes . After watching the Oscars for the last 15 years you get sort of good at calculating who will win so this is the closest I ever get to betting on anything.

Don’t forget to let me know your predictions - I love when people join in on Hollywood’s biggest race of the year!

Red dot: logical predictions

Blue dot: what I believe deserves the award the most (if there is no blue dot that choice aligns with my personal choice).

HAPPY OSCARS DAY!

HAPPY OSCARS DAY!

Any films you wish had made the list that didn’t? Comment below!

Photo Journal: Tattooed by Lauren Winzer

Anyone that knows me is well aware of my obsession with Captain Jack Sparrow. My most loved character of all-time played by my favourite actor of all-time - how could I not commemorate my adoration? It’s his courage, humour, caution-to-the-wind spirit and heart (made up of more gold than he’s stolen) that captivated me the instant I saw him on the silver screen in 2003.

I wanted a reminder to be that fearless and to not take life so seriously. I wanted a reminder that it is not just important, but a necessity to break the rules; doing something good in the eyes of others does not always mean it is right. POTC Trivia: Did you know before Jack was Captain Jack, he once sailed the Black Pearl under Lord Cutler Beckett's command, but deserted the Navy after refusing to carry slave cargo? He really is the best pirate I’ve ever seen. At 20 I knew I wanted his nine pieces of eight beaded headpiece etched into the right side of my ribcage. Fast forward 6 years and I finally had my dream tattoo booked in at Hunter and Fox in Beaconsfield.

A minimalist when it comes to ink, I love the dainty stuff; the finer details. Over the years I had heard of Lauren Winzer, but didn’t realise the level of demand she is in until I went to book her - well worth the wait by the way! It took about 7 months of waiting after expressing interest in an appointment and being put on her waitlist, but what else can you expect from the Queen of fine lines who gave Post Malone his famous Playboy bunny?

Hunter and Fox sits in a small double story studio on Botany Road, and you’ll know if Lauren is in if her bright pink Jeep is parked out front. Once buzzed in, you’ll sit and admire the walls covered in quirky artworks by Mr Flash Machine and watch the fanatics before you get their amazing pieces done. From beginning to end it was a fantastic experience and Lauren is incredibly enjoyable to be around. Any questions you have she’s happy to not just answer, but have a full conversation which I always find to be a true testament to being a quality human being.

I found her story so inspiring and ringing true to a few things I’ve learned over the past year - when you do what you love, regardless of the warnings you garner in doing so, success will find its way to you and in turn; happiness. From “sh!t-kicker office jobs” all through her twenties, to doodling at work and friends requesting tattoo designs (because she is an incredibly talented drawer) to international celebrity tattoo artist. Lauren is walking proof that there is nothing wrong with not having everything figured out in your twenties and finding your path later on or honing in on what you really love doing in your spare time. Who knows - maybe I’ll start my tattoo apprenticeship at 30 - I wouldn’t rule it out just yet.

Thank you so much to my beautiful sister and bestest friend in the whole world, Alana for taking my (probably annoying) photographic direction so well and snapping these epic moments of myself.

All other photos were taken by me and all photos were edited by yours truly.

Looking forward to more photo journaling for you!

Ocean Grove

Last night I got my first photo pass in a while for The Amity Affliction’s ‘All My Friends Are Dead’ Tour with Ocean Grove, Antagonist AD and Red Hook. The University of Wollongong’s Unibar is a phenomenal venue and what a lineup it was! So much energy, most notably from Ocean Grove who absolutely blew me away - Dale Tanner radiates serious Anthony Keidis vibes and knows how to work a crowd. If you haven’t seen these guys live, you are seriously missing out!

If you’re big on that 90s-00s nu metal sort of nostalgia (think Nirvana with a dash of Limp Bizkit and a pinch of Oasis) they’re right up your alley. If RAGE was still a thing their videos would be on a constant loop. You can listen to their latest single SUNNY here.

All four galleries from the tour will be up soon, but you can check out my Ocean Grove pics now!

I liked it, so I shot it #2

Once again inspiration hit and I had no model. So with my Mark IV, my backyard and the 2pm sunlight I headed out to do a self-shoot.

I used my dad’s old work van and his shed for those rustic vibes and colours. My favourite creative moment was glancing over at the ladder and deciding to shoot through instead of on it. The unplanned and unexpected ideas are always the best!

There is actually a 70s Cher inspired shoot I have been wanting to do for a while on film (and I will!), but in the meantime here are some photographs with a hint of that vibe to kick off the new year. The one I initially want to do is more grainy and not as warm in texture, but I’m happy with the aesthetic of this one. :)

Makeup, styling, photos and editing by yours truly.

Let me know what you think in the comments below!

I liked it, so I shot it #1

I am a very observant person. Constantly taking in my surroundings and noticing the little things. When I see something I like for whatever reason - it’s rustic, rundown, has loads of junk that can be used as props, or it just looks plain cool, I will want to shoot there.

In one glance I’ll have about 137563790 ideas for shots I want and I’ll make it my goal to capture those images within a maximum of two hours. Unless of course it’s a warehouse that isn’t exactly abandoned and there’s a risk of getting caught, but I love these challenges!

These were taken in a yard close by to my home where I noticed piles of industrial equipment had recently replaced the open, lush greenery. There was also an old, burnt car sat amongst the metal which I immediately knew I wanted to get shots with. Having only one afternoon to get the shots, I set out to jump the fence and do a self-shoot . I was obviously limited for model choices but for anyone that knows me I love being ion front of the camera as much as behind it, so it was no issue for me! Plus, when you do self-portraits you get exactly the posing and framing you are going for which is great!

I’ll be sure to share more of these little challenge shoots I go on and cannot wait for the next one.
